Ziggy can hardly contain herself. She saw my skis and instantly started making circles, tongue out and eyes wide and barking. The moment she sees those skinny skis, she knows what's coming. And when we reach the trailhead, she can barely wait for me to click into my bindings before she’s pulling at the leash, excitedly nipping at the tips of my skis, encouraging me to get moving!
If you’re looking to hit the trails with your dog but aren’t exactly sure where to start, you’re in the right place! This story is dedicated to all the dog owners who want to share the joy of cross-country skiing with their furry companions. Park City is a paradise for Nordic skiers, with countless miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, but a lesser-known fact is how many of those groomed areas are also open to off-leash dogs. Whether you’re a seasoned Nordic skier or a beginner, these trails are the perfect place to enjoy Park City’s winter magic with your pup!
Round Valley - An Off Leash Paradise
Round Valley is the crown jewel of dog-friendly winter recreation in Park City. With over 25 miles of groomed trails, this area is ideal for cross-country skiing, fat tire biking, and snowshoeing. Good dogs are allowed throughout much of Round Valley, but make sure to keep an eye on signage, as certain zones do not permit your canine companions.
- Why It’s Great: Wide-open spaces, stunning views of the Park City Ridgeline, regular grooming, and trails for all skill levels.
- Dog Rules: Off-leash allowed in designated areas; on-leash required at all trailheads. Always carry a leash and waste bags.
- Trail Difficulty: Easy to hard.
- Special Note: Moose and elk are frequently spotted in the area, so make sure your dog is always under control when wildlife is present.
Willow Creek Park
Located just off Highway 224 between Kimball Junction and downtown Park City, Willow Creek Park offers smaller, flat, groomed terrain—perfect for a quick Nordic skiing session to get out some puppy wiggles.
- Why It’s Great: Family-friendly, with easy parking and access to the trails.
- Dog Rules: On-leash on trails; off-leash allowed in the dog park. There is a well-marked no-dog area for additional skiing on private property adjacent to the park.
- Trail Difficulty: Easy, flat groomed trails only.
Special Note: Willow Creek Park also features a dog agility course, making it a perfect blend of mental and physical stimulation for your dog.
White Pine Touring Dog Loop - A Private Nordic Experience
This lesser-known trail provides a serene and uncrowded cross-country skiing experience just off Highway 224 near the White Barn. Maintained by the White Pine Nordic Center, it is the only section of trail within their network that allows dogs.
- Why It’s Great: Close proximity to downtown Park City.
- Dog Rules: On-leash.
- Trail Difficulty: Beginner-friendly short loop.

Après-Ski for Dogs
After a day on the trails, reward your pup with some relaxation at one of Park City’s dog-friendly spots. Many local restaurants and breweries have patios where your dog is welcome to join (weather permitting). A few favorites of mine include the outdoor seating areas at Top of Main Brew Pub and Hearth and Hill on a warm day.
