High Country Fly Fishers

Park City, UT

Overview

High Country Fly Fishers (HCFF) stands as a Trout Unlimited chapter with a dedicated focus on conservation, nestled in the picturesque Park City. Since its establishment in 1989, HCFF has proudly served as the Summit and Wasatch County Chapter of Trout Unlimited (www.tu.org). Monthly gatherings take place at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, featuring speakers ranging from fishing guides and fly tyers to fisheries biologists hailing from across the Western states. Refer to our Calendar page for precise meeting dates, where both longstanding friends and new members are always welcomed for engaging conversations, compelling programs, and the exchange of fish tales.

Our diverse range of activities includes fly fishing and tying classes, conservation projects, veteran fly fishing outings supporting Project Healing Waters (https://projecthealingwaters.org/), youth fly fishing training in collaboration with the Park City Recreation Program, backing Casting for Recovery (https://castingforrecovery.org/), and engaging in conservation initiatives alongside the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Our commitment to these endeavors relies heavily on the voluntary efforts of our members and financial support through donations and grants.

Trout in the Classroom is an annual initiative wherein HCFF volunteers collaborate with teachers to set up and test equipment in classrooms. Students participate in the entire process, from raising fertilized trout eggs and learning about aquatic biology to releasing fingerling-size trout into DWR-approved ponds in May. This hands-on experience imparts valuable lessons on water quality, habitat, survival instincts, life cycles, food chains, conservation, and the responsibility of caring for others and the environment.

One of our ongoing conservation projects is the maintenance and replacement of Weber River Crossovers, providing access to the popular fishing destination between Rockport and Echo reservoirs. HCFF has been actively involved in this project for over a decade, utilizing club funds and grants for upkeep and replacements. Currently exploring more durable crossover materials, such as steel, we aim to reduce maintenance costs and enhance longevity.

Boot Cleaning Stations

The Boot Wash Station Project addresses the spread of invasive species on the Middle Provo, featuring refurbished boot washing stations and monofilament collection bins. HCFF collaborates with various organizations to maintain these stations from May through September.

Our commitment to education is evident through Beginner Fly Fishing courses, a Beginner Fly Tying course, and an Advanced Fly Tying course, complemented by a mentoring program for those seeking personalized guidance.

The Beginner Fly Fishing clinic, held twice a year in May and June, spans three days and is conducted by experienced HCFF members. This comprehensive introduction covers tackle, entomology, reading the water, a casting clinic at the Deer Valley ponds, and an opportunity for hands-on fishing with an experienced angler at one of our local rivers or lakes. HCFF provides all necessary equipment, and the $95 clinic fee includes a one-year membership in HCFF.

The Beginner Fly Tying course occurs on three consecutive Saturday mornings, with HCFF supplying all equipment and materials, though participants are welcome to bring their own. Enrollment is limited to 10 students to ensure personalized one-on-one instruction, and a donation for materials and snacks is appreciated.

For those looking to advance their skills, the Advanced Fly Tying course is held over four consecutive Saturday mornings. Featuring guest presenters showcasing their favorite patterns and instructing on effective fishing techniques, each session covers three or four flies. Past sessions are available on our HCFF YouTube Channel, and as with the Beginner Fly Tying course, a donation is appreciated to cover materials and snacks.

The mentoring program at HCFF provides personalized experiences for individuals seeking to enhance their skills. The mentoring sessions cover a range of topics, including Attractor Fishing, exploring Uinta Lakes, mastering Euro Nymphing on the Provo, Trout Spey techniques on the Provo, Fishing with Dry Flies and Nymphs, an Introduction to the Provo River, comprehensive insights into All Things Middle Provo, and the art of Stillwater Kickboat Fishing.
