A trip to Main Street is a must when visiting Park City. Lined with historic buildings, the chairlift that runs right into town, and the variety of shops to explore—it's a picturesque way to spend an afternoon before heading to dinner.
My trip to Main Street started with a quick bus ride. There are stops all over town and the bus is free, so it was a no-brainer. We opted to start at the bottom of Main Street to grab a warm beverage from Atticus Coffee & Teahouse before window shopping. Atticus is a cozy little shop with delicious beverages and books galore.
As you stroll the sidewalk, be sure to take the time to explore the different galleries and mountain-chic boutiques. One of my favorites is Dolly’s Bookstore, which has that small town, indie bookshop vibe. It’s also connected to Rocky Mountain Chocolate shop; who wouldn’t want a sweet treat? There are loads of great places to shop and dine on Main Street, so it’s a must-see activity in Park City

Let's Find a Hat
On this particular visit to Main Street, I was on a bit of a mission... I was looking to get a custom cowboy hat. It’s something I’ve wanted (er. . . needed) for a while and there are few western shops on Main Street where you can get a custom one done.

And there’s no better way to commemorate a trip west than with a cowboy hat, right? Picture this, you just got your custom hat done and now you’re walking toward dinner as the snow lightly falls. Sounds ideal to me! I walked into Kemo Sabe near the top of Main Street not really knowing what to expect. I had an idea of what style and color I would like, based on hats that I’ve worn before.
What I didn’t realize was just how many styles, colors, accessories there would be to choose from! Each hat is made in Gainsville, Texas, and they all start the same, with a flat brim. You try different shapes and styles and go from there. I started with dark green because it’s one of my favorite colors and I wear it a lot. But after walking around with it on I realized a brown hat was better suited for my style.

The hatmakers are experts at their craft. Our skilled hat connoisseur Taylor talked to me about what I typically wear, what colors would complement my hair, and what style would fit my face. The best part? Kemosabe has a quiet speakeasy, and we were able to enjoy a cocktail while enjoying the process unfold.
As Taylor began steaming and reshaping my hat, I sipped on my delicious spicy margarita while talking to the bartender, Heather. She told us about the speakeasy space, and how alive it became during Sundance just the week before.
The bar is open to the public and can hold private parties. If you follow celebrity lives or are an avid watcher of The Real Housewives, you will be happy to know that the Park City location has the famous “Kathy’s Tequila,” “Lisa’s Tequila,” and “Kendall’s Tequila” bottles on display.

Now that the hat is shaped, it's time for accessorizing. The number of charms, bands, and pins can be a bit overwhelming. I didn’t even know where to start! Thankfully, Taylor was there to walk me through each step. Since I went with a brown hat instead of green, she suggested we bring in some green accents with a couple of rich green color ribbons as the base of my hat and two feathers that had a bit of a reddish-green tint.

The feathers are included on any custom hat along with branding. The branding itself is so fun! They have every letter of the alphabet, along with an array of icons like snowflakes, cowboy boots, dog paws, almost anything you can think of! I chose my initials. . . but I’m still debating getting a snowflake in the future, lucky for me they said I can bring my hat back whenever I’d like and get additional branding for free!

Of course, I couldn’t stop there. I found a leather band that I loved and sterling silver skis that securely slid right onto the brim of the hat. I thought I was done and satisfied, but Taylor showed me a box of cards that could be burned and added into the band, and I took her up on it.
The custom hat experience can take anywhere from 30 minutes to as long as 2 or more hours. My advice? Bring your friends, have a cocktail, and enjoy it!

More Spots to Find a Custom hat
In Park City we are lucky enough to have three custom cowboy hat shops to choose from! Each shop will provide exceptional service to get you the hat of your dreams.
Burns Cowboy Shop
The tried-and-true classic, Burns was established in 1876 and is the oldest same family-owned western retail business in the world. Whether you live the cowboy lifestyle, or appreciate the beauty the West provides, Burns will have a timeless product for you. My friend went through the custom hat making experience at Burns Cowboy Shop and absolutely loved it! This store is a must stop when you’re walking Main Street.
JW Bennett
This is a business I’m continually in awe of. Tucked right behind Main Street next to Alpine Distilling, JW Bennett is a woman owned and operated business with locations in Park City, Utah and Jackson, Wyoming. All hats are made in Jackson Hole at their flagship shop that opened in 2019. Inspired by the mountain West, you can absolutely feel the love that was poured into creating these hats. Schedule a consultation in advance or stop in and say hello!
