Has the television show Yellowstone inspired you to 'pony up’ to the Western cowboy lifestyle? Good news, you can play pretend under the guidance of North 40 Escapes’ horseback riding experiences, and you can even catch a glimpse of where scenes from the show were filmed—including Rip’s cabin!

Here we go—the entrance to the Stillman Ranch in Oakley, UT!

North 40 Escapes and the Stillman Ranch

North 40 Escapes leases property from the Stillman Ranch in Oakley, Utah. The Stillman family homesteaded the land in the late 1800s, and it still operates as an active sheep herding ranch today. While we didn’t see any sheep, we saw a few deer in the hillside and birds of prey flying overhead. Book a morning ride for the best chance to see wildlife. There are up to three rides per day, at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 1:00 pm. You can choose a one-hour or two-hour guided tour, all suitable for ages 8+.

The Stillman Ranch and its stunning mountain backdrop!

I was greeted by Walt, the very friendly and extremely knowledgeable cowboy, or wrangler, when I arrived. All North 40’s guides are experts in navigating the terrain, and they also have a deep love and appreciation for horses – making sure that both the rider and the horse were comfortable before setting off.

As Walt diligently selected each of our horses, I thought, “Is he reading our energies or something? How is he making these selections having only met us for about five minutes?”. Walt’s divine selection yielded a genuine connection between myself and my horse, Shaggy.

Saddle Up

Shaggy was aptly named for his shaggy and scraggly mane, adorned with braids. He’s a half-linger, a draft horse typically used to pull wagons and known for their calm disposition. Prior to riding, it’s important to form a connection with your horse by approaching it calmly and confidently. You can do this by gently stroking the horse and talking to it softly. When in doubt, take a deep breath so you can show up and be present.

Shaggy was always ready to eat!

Before riding, your guide will ensure that your gear is properly fitted and secure, but it’s important to know what to expect. First, check that the saddle is secure and that the stirrups are positioned to accommodate your height. When you’re ready to mount the horse, stand on its left side and place your left foot in the stirrup. Use the reins and saddle to maintain balance while swinging your right leg over the horse’s back and gently lower yourself into the saddle. Once you’re on the horse, sit straight up (bonus opportunity to work on your posture!) with your feet in the stirrups with your heels pointed down, and then you’re ready to ride.

On the Trail

While riding, Shaggy seized every opportunity to snack on any piece of tall grass or purple thistle within reach—a horse after my own heart. Aside from Shaggy’s chewing, there were moments where all I could hear was the rhythmic clopping of hooves and the gentle rustle of the aspen leaves we brushed past. The expansive meadows stretched for what felt like miles before we entered a denser forest by crossing stream after stream. The peace and tranquility were palpable, allowing me to truly unplug and connect with my surroundings.

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life—whether it be a solo adventure or a family-friendly group activity—horseback riding won’t disappoint.

Truly epic mountain scenery can be found in the foothills of the Uinta mountains!

What to Wear

When preparing for your ride, be sure to wear appropriate clothing. As cute and trendy as your cowboy hat and fringe pants are – they’re not the best outfit choices for your first time horseback riding. It’s recommended to dress for both your comfort and safety and to avoid loose clothing. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are essential to keep your feet secured in the stirrups. Long pants, like jeans, are ideal. You can also opt to wear gloves for extra grip, and a helmet that properly fits for extra safety precautions. North 40 Escapes, and many riding companies, will have helmets available for use. Lastly, be sure to listen to and follow your guide’s instructions!
