During my sophomore summer going into my Junior year of highschool, my parents asked me about an idea to move to Italy. I simply asked, “Well, when can I could start packing?”
In early February of 2001 I moved to Perugia, Italy for 17 months. In 4 months time I was carving Marble; White Carrara Marble!!!!!
My father met an interesting American living in Italy. He happened to be an artist and carved marble. I was fortunate to be reading “The Agony And The Ecstasy” , a biography of Michelangelo. When asked if I wanted to have stone carving lessons, a dream I didn’t think possible suddenly became a reality. I was able to study multiple times a week for many hours, in a historical stone house, which used to be Roman barracks.
Carving stone is such a special experience, mentally and physically. I created letscarvestone to help share this amazing form of art to anyone who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance.

Consists of 1.5 hour lessons familiarizing each participant with the tools, the carving station, and a quick but thorough demonstration for their uses. The group will move on to discuss what creations to construct with Maestro Matteo… He will select a few pieces of your choice of Utah Alabaster. He will then help the group quickly sketch the discussed creation. We begin by clamping the stone before we start to carve. Maestro Mateo then provides one-on-one guidance and direction through the carving process and various techniques, which all work towards a satisfactory outcome. Once the carved shape is complete, Matteo will guide you through the 3-step polishing process utilizing three different grits of wet sandpaper—or a 4-step process if you desire to attach it to a wire keepsake to wear home as a necklace!

Teaching the simple awesome power we have within ourselves with the right material, training and tools, there is no limit to what you can create, because having the ability and practice to look inward into stone and see anything is possible!
